Iceland - Highlights and information

I have now been back for a few days and figured I should summarize my Icelandic findings a little more concise. Quick what I learned, found out to be helpful, places to go, eye masks ( they are really important), and other nuggets as I think of them.

Logan Airport Terminal E - is great, I always like flying out of Logan, water bottle filling stations not crappy water fountains or super hot bathroom water ( more on this at KEF). Easy to get to, fast security and over all comfortable

Wow AIR - http://wowair.us/

They are a new and small fleet airline that get low prices by up charging you for actually selecting a seat, ( you get a seat but if you want one next to your partner then you pay or they just give you a seat when you check in. They charge for water and all snacks on the plane so stock up in the airport before boarding. They are definitely a good option for an affordable flight from BOS to KEF. Your going to get emails about APIS & ESTA if you are traveling from the US as a USA citizen I think you can disregard, I was never asked for anything and everything i read was about coming from Iceland to the USA

KEF- Keflavik International Airport - http://www.kefairport.is/english/

  1. Buy something to eat quickly upstairs before going down to baggage claim, a duty free store is located in the basement baggage claim area, and outside of the security doors a loud music and juice bar place is available and a convenience store with drinks and snacks.
  2. At the green convenience store place on the right you can but a Siminn sim card for your unlock phone, (important call your service provider and get your phone unlocked for international travel before leaving if you do not have a global phone) you can get a 100 min, 100 sms, 1 GB data card for around $20. and you can add more data or phone minutes here after you set it up. It is incredible how nice it is to have google maps to find stuff and navigate for you. Everything is laid out well and you could easily get by on this sim card for a week or more as long as you do not share to many photos and stream music.  if you dial 00-1-###-###-#### you can call the USA clear as a bell and only use double minutes. The data connection throughout the country is also reat you can text, chat, and video call from a lot of cool places. I was never really without some sort of connection it is not LTE ( unless your in VIK) but you can get by on the slower speeds on Maps and web surfing to find your next cool black sand beach.
  3. When leaving and gong through
Blu rental cars - http://www.bluecarrental.is/
  1. Great cars, great staff, include a lot of the insurances, manual transmission, diesel, and awesome pebble floor at the pick up center. Could not have been happier with the experience of picking up and dropping off.
Iceland - as a whole
  1. NO STOP SIGNS, well some at the airport and I found one more in 12 days. Very few trees exist so you can see "traffic" or the one car maybe if you are outside the city and safely and easily merge onto the roads. Otherwise get prepared for round-about AKA more yield signs. It is wonderful and the speed limit cameras are well marked 90 KPH on wide open roads is hard to keep steady.
  2. Purple Lupins everywhere or at least on the west side of the nation where I spent most of my days and otherwise a lot of rocks covered in moss
  3. Eye Masks if you are going when there is a chance it is going to be light out 24 hrs, get one if you do not already have one and this one was like turning off the sun
  4. The birds, when you are driving you will inevitably hit a bird, no trees for kilometers, no obstructions in any direction and the bird in or on the side of the road will just fly into the road. I would guess that I had at least one near miss a day of a bird or at least a flinch that it was going to hit me.
  5. Kronan vs Bonus - Supermarkets. Go to Kronan, better hours, better selection, same if not lower prices and much better selection of goods.
Thank you for reading and as i think of more I will update this

Iceland - Day 8 explore

Today we explored our surroundings, I started off the morning with a hike around the peninsula to check out the unoccupied hot spring (finally, people are always driving by or stopping in to ask for direction. It must be the only one for a while around as it is busy). Then I found a trekking crew and we went across the road and hiked a mountain. It was moss covered rocks, that sort of move under foot, yet easy to climb. It was a fairly quick hike up and it got a little steep and sketchy so we went 92% of the way. It was still awesome. After the hike I went in the local hot spring tub. It's a hot spring running into a concrete and rock pool about the size of a hot tub. I then wadded out into the ocean and dive in and "swam" a couple strokes and then promptly removed myself from the freezing cold water. (It did not feel colder then maine ocean water because it's not 90 degrees out like when we swim at home) This is what a picnic area in iceland looks like, this is n...

Iceland - Day 6 Vik

I s tarted by making my chofeur drop off for the volunteers. Followed by my start to Vik. I stopped at Seljalandsfoss so I could walk behind a waterfall. It was right next to the road and was a wet hike around the falls. Next up Skógafoss, 36ish double stairs and 390 regular stairs later and you can be at the top. It was foggy and was not the best view today but it looked like it was clearer on the return trip. Then turned right to go to Reynisfjara, a very black beach. The very round and smooth rocks size changed from the water to the cliffs, the stone was larger by the water and became increasingly smaller as you got further away. The waves were very big and crashed very close to the shore. I then went to Vik to look at the Reynisdrangar from another vantage point. The beach was quiet, I somehow ended up being the only person on the one to the right if the seawall long enough to get a few pictures. I then scaled the tiny town to go take pictures at the vik church. I then ...
